During the month of October, Luke Jordan, a Coding Teacher at Rockvale High, left his position due to him not being able to provide for his family. Students who took his class are feeling tons of remorse due to his parting. Jordan wasn’t just a teacher to these students; he was their friendly connection to the school.
So why did Jordan leave his job here? He left due to not being able to provide for his family with the pay the school was giving him. According to Parker Shanklin, “He stated bluntly multiple times the amount of money the school does not pay him.” The reason Jordan is leaving his position now, is because he was hired for a position that pays more than being a teacher, for less than a quarter of the hours. On the upside, he can spend more time with his kids, and he can be a good father for them. The downside is that every student who has him or who did have him will probably never see him again.

Turning our attention to the school side, why is it that people as influential and important as teachers get paid so little? There really is no clear answer, but the cause isn’t the problem anymore. It’s the effect. The effect of almost every school being understaffed and desperate. According to Collette Coleman in The New York Times, because of the low pay in the school system, teachers are leaving for better paying jobs and leaving schools desolate.
